Looking back at Bodycam's Early Access launch (June 2024)
On June 7, 2024, two French brothers launched the most realistic shooter of the moment on Steam. Sales, Unrecord comparisons, first patches and what has changed since.
On June 7, 2024, Bodycam launched in Early Access on Steam (PC only). Behind it was Reissad Studio, a French studio founded by two brothers, Luca and Léo, who according to Wikipedia were 17 and 20 when they started it. The project began as a personal test of Unreal Engine 5 lighting and grew into a full multiplayer shooter.
A shooter that looks like real footage
The pitch is in the name: you play from the point of view of a body camera. In its launch coverage, PCGamesN described a deliberately tense, disorienting experience: every step makes the image bounce and blur, lights blow out, and gunshots seem to overload the camera's microphone.
It was compared to hardcore shooters of the time like Escape From Tarkov and Gray Zone Warfare, although Bodycam focused on fast multiplayer matches rather than extraction. The other obvious comparison was Unrecord, a project with a very similar bodycam look that had gone viral earlier.
An instant bestseller
- According to Wikipedia, Bodycam was Steam's best-selling game in its launch week, despite mixed early reviews.
- By July 2024 it had sold around 800,000 copies, with estimated revenue of about €20 million.
Early criticism focused on thin content and technical issues, which is common in Early Access. The visuals, sound and gunplay, however, were praised almost across the board.
The first patches
In its first week, the studio shipped several rounds of quick fixes, with patch notes dated June 9, 10 and 12, 2024. It also promised a roadmap with weapons, maps, skins and a zombies mode "throughout the rest of the year". It delivered that in November with Zombies mode and two new maps.
Two years later
Since launch, Bodycam has moved to Unreal Engine 5.5 in v0.7.0, brought in a much larger team and, in September 2026, shipped the Locked & Loaded update, which broke the player record set in summer 2024.
